RAFF IT UP! - November & December, 2001 and January, 2002

RAFF Community Building displays at trade fairs and the like, show and tell.

Jessie Dawson of the Kwanlun Dun First Nation in Whitehorse, Yukon called to talk about how to have an effective community building RAFF display at a trade fair in other words what can you do in that context to encourage people to talk to you and to get involved. We decided that if you remember to RAFF it would be effective…..

RELATIONSHIPS

How can you build on them and make more of them happen?

  • Have your asset map and/or your community connections map that shows the connections that you have already formed in the community and maybe have people add their name on it to.
  • Have your interview questionnaire there and interview people as they visit the display. Even if you just have them answer one of the questions about their skills and abilities

ACTION

  • Have a draw box and ask people to answer a question about a treasure in their community…ie. Where in our community can we find great story teller?
  • Have poster where people can add their name to questions like:
    - I would you like to help our youth.
    - I enjoy planning festivals and celebrations
    - I enjoy crafts… crocheting, bead work, quilting etc.
    - I would like to learn more about….
    - I enjoy gardening and the outdoors
  • Have a handout that tells people what you are about, what you do and where and when you are getting together next

FOOD

  • Have food and good food….cookies, juice, a candy bowl etc.

FUN

  • Have a smile on your face, and make sure you encourage people to add their name to the draw box.

Try these they work.

Thanks for asking Jessie.
