The RIFF RAFF project has been a lot of fun and hard work for many people over the past two years. Over 300 people have participated in the project. Many people have attended the monthly RIFF RAFF potlucks, completed the in-person surveys, and or provided feedback on the process, the goals and the indicators. We now have fourteen goals with indicators and measurements that will help JPGF measure and show success. These goals and indicators will also help JPGF focus its efforts over the next five to ten years. The fourteen Goals that will show the success of JPGF are:

  • Positive Image
  • Health and Well-Being/Citizen Economic Well-being
  • Visual Appeal
  • Safe Community
  • Thriving Local Business
  • Children and Youth
  • Environmental conscious
  • Housing
  • Connections
  • Friendly Neighbourhood
  • More Participation
  • Life-long learning
  • Self- Sustaining
  • Building Community through Communication

Each year March to June will be the measurement months when the counting, surveying and calling happens. This yearly measurement exercise will track the changes in the goals and indicators. It will show us where the successes of JPGF have been and where we need to do more.

So far, with the baseline information that we have collected we can see that there have been positive changes in all 14 goals and indicators. Some of the positive trends we are seeing are in the areas of Positive Image, Visual appeal, More Participation, Connections, Environmentally Conscious, Thriving Local Business Community, Building Community through Communication Building. For example the survey suggests that people are feeling more positive about living or working in the JPGF area; there seems to be less visible garbage; more people are doing renovations to their homes; more people are moving into the area and staying longer; and businesses have seen growth. Next year will tell us more because we will have two years to compare.

Atlanta, Georgia and Red Deer, Alberta presentions showed the successes of the RIFF RAFF and JPGF at the Society for Community Research and Action, and the Alberta Public Health conference.

This fun and exciting research has been funded through the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research (AHFMR). JPGF will be on its own to carry on the yearly measurements.
